I · A Secret Written Across the Sky
In certain summers, vast numbers of brown-veined white butterflies rise from the semi-arid interior and drift north-east across the country. They are small and delicate — predominantly white and cream, traced with fine brown veining — and in their numbers they turn an ordinary afternoon into something quietly astonishing.

Across the Highveld, the movement passes over farmland and open grassland.
Look closer.
Up close, the wings are white with fine dark veining and a darker border dotted with pale spots. It is a modest creature — which is precisely what makes its collective journey so moving.

Why Do They Move?
This is a natural migration shaped by population density and weather. After good rains in the Karoo, numbers swell; the butterflies then travel, often in a consistent direction, across veld, farms and cities alike.
